Consecutive translation
This method of interpretation involves the interpreter listening carefully to a segment of the speaker’s speech, remembering or taking notes on key aspects, and then accurately conveying the message in another language. Unlike simultaneous interpretation, this method includes short pauses in the speech, allowing the interpreter to deliver the translation to the audience.
Experienced interpreters often formulate the translation in their minds while listening to the speaker. When it is their turn to speak, they can quickly and clearly convey the information, ensuring a smooth conversation. This method maintains a natural flow of communication, as pauses are usually brief, and the speaking rhythm remains uninterrupted.
Consecutive interpretation is typically used in situations where simultaneous interpretation equipment is unavailable or unnecessary. It is widely applied in business meetings, negotiations, wedding ceremonies, official events, legal proceedings, document signings at notaries, interviews with foreign nationals, medical consultations, and other settings where precise and clear communication is essential.
Due to its flexibility and simplicity, consecutive interpretation is an indispensable tool for facilitating clear and effective communication between speakers of different languages. It is not just a technical translation process but also an art that requires quick thinking, excellent memory, precise language delivery, and the ability to adapt to various communication styles.
